Were you one of those kids who took everything apart to find out how it worked?
Always tinkering around with things to find out whether there are any improvements to find?
Are you the same with computers?
Then if you are (un)lucky enough to be using Microsoft's shinning Windows 95 then you have probably "Tinkered" too far and broken it, or certainly come close.
You've probably looked at 95 and wondered what is going on. The two system setup and control files (system.ini and win.ini) we came to know and love so much under 3.1 have gone (almost).. Now, in their place, lives one big monster, better known as ... The Registry..

This is not the sort of thing to wade in and start changing, as 95 (or NT for that matter) will get quite offended if you make a mistake or change something best left alone. In the worst case scenario you can "break" things completely and the machine will simply refuse to boot, time to reinstall.
Say yourself a lot of time, effort and hair pulling - Read this book!

Everything is here, from the ground up. The authors, 4 in all, guide you in the workings of 95 and how to avoid those painful, and time consuming mistakes...

First up is backing up the Registry so you can get things back the way they were if it should turn ugly during your tinkering.
This is a section to miss out (I WAS JOKING!). If you don't enjoy installing 95 and all your software, then, MAKE A BACK-UP!

From here on its into the thick of things and the registry itself is taken apart and explained, piece by piece. I won't bother going into it all here (that's what the book is for) but I'm much clearer on the subject now, which must be a good thing!

There are lots of handy tips and pointers along the way that will help you to customize 95 to your hearts content, and also pointers on how to get it running faster and more efficiently.
As well as this, all the really troublesome scenarios, like duel booting config's, ms-dos programs, 16 bit application under 95 etc. all get explained in depth leaving you without a doubt on how to get things running "properly" under 95. (Or as properly as it lets you)...

The book comes with a CD tucked inside the cover, which includes a variety of utilities which will help you to get the best from 95. A bunch of net utilities are included too, and some not quite so useful utilities I wonder whether anyone ever uses...

All in all, and excellent read if you "need to know" these things....

Good luck, and may the force be with you...
