Miami TCP review.

I was saying to my brother a couple of weeks ago...
"What the Amiga needs is a one-file, complete AmiTCP replacement, so that we can get rid of all those hundreds of confusing little files scattered over various directories, half of which you never seem to use, and most you don't know what they do!"
Or words to that effect, honest!

Now, lo and behold, this blokes done it! One program to automatically register, one program to set-up the required information/parameters, then one program, the main program, to start a TCP replacement, dial up, log you in, and control all the background tasks just like AmiTCP used to! Amazing! Marvellous! Just what an Amiga owner needs.

So you just unpack it, run the install script or simply copy the drawer to where you want it, then run the initialise program. This is the one which configures the main program. All configuration options can still be changed within the main program, but this initialise thingy tries to automate it as much as possible. Once you've supplied your phone number, modem settings and a couple of other things, it will dial up and try to get you connected. If it is successfull the settings can be transfered to the main prog. If not, you just go back and check your settings, then try again. Not overly complicated, especially if you've tried to get AmiTCP set-up and working before!

Now load up the main Miami program (this is what you will use from now on), import the prefs from the initialise prog, now just click on the 'online' button, and you'll find Robert is a very close relative and you're connected.

Miami TCP works with most of the programs that run under AmiTCP. Now what we really, really need is a one-file mail program, chuck in Ibrowse and GUI-FTP, then you'll have just about everything that's needed for your surfing in just a couple of easy programmes. It'll probably save loads of disk space as well.

Go to the Miami Now site now.

If you use the unregistered version you will be limited to one hours on-line time and some of the minor but usefull options are disabled. Register and you will be sent a key to enable these options and not restrict on-line times. An excellent program that's well worth registering. I'll be using it from now on, it's so much easier than AmiTCP.
