Railroad Tycoon
Microprose / Guildhall Leisure - £12.99

Here's another great re-release, and about time too! Railroad Tycoon. If you're one of those anoracks who like messing about with your 'oo' gauge puffer, then you'll love this.

Several trains

Control trains, manage and upgrade stations, organise and deliver various cargos, survey the land and lay your lines between towns and cities, and, obviously, control your finances in order to be able to do all of the above.

Starting with a large scale map view of the prefered country / continent, you place your first station. Positioning is important because to get a good start you will need two large towns fairly close to each other so that you can begin moving goods straight away. In order to do this you must obviously lay track and purchase a train. Depending on which scenario you started with depends on the amount of engines available, start in England and you have a choice of one! Start in America and three are available straight away. However the older ones become obsolete as time progresses but more do turn up.

Once cargo gets shifted money will start to come in, so it's time to pay off the loans, invest in some stocks with yourself or one of the other companies, buy more track and stations or even buy-out one of the other railroads (you'll need a fair wad of cash to do that).

The only thing missing from this game is a 3D texture mapped, first person perspective, cockpit view of actually driving a train, everything else is here (as far as I know!) including all the bells and whistles and other silly noises that trains make.

An excellent strategy game that doesn't actually take too long to complete, and with Sid Meiers name behind it you know it's got to be good.
