UFO: Enemy Unknown
Microprose / Guildhall Leisure - £12.99

Another great re-release from Microprose and Guildhall. This is a strategy game of very lengthy proportions, pertaining to alien infiltration and kicking some serious non-native butt!

Autopsy

You are in charge of X-Com, who have been given the enviable job of controlling the inevitable onrush of green alien scum as they inflict terror and disease amongst the poor indigenous population of our little planet.

To this end, you must keep all nations as alien-free as possible so they keep their funding high. The funds are spent on Interceptors to shoot UFOs down, Soldiers to clean up (kill) the alien survivors, Scientists to research bigger and better weapons and equipment, Engineers to build the equipment, and more Command Bases with more of the above to neutralize even more incursions from more of the inhuman alien foe.

Once an alien ship has been detected you can send an Interceptor craft to try and shoot it down. If it isn't destroyed completely and lands somewhere you can then dispatch the ground troops to clear up the remnants of opposition. The view changes from a rotating globe where you control all your planning, strategy and research to a 3D isometric turn based game in the same vein as Sabre Team. In fact, this was made by the same people that made Laser Squad and Sabre Team, so if you have played either of these before then you'll know what to expect, the only difference is that this is 200 times better than both of them combined.

After defeating all the remaining miscreants your troops clean up and place all the bodies and artefacts in the stores, where you can research, sell or use them as you wish. Then it's back to trying to find more aliens to destroy. Eventually you will see alien battleships that will need more than a little Interceptor to bring down ( this is one area where research is needed ). Terror sites, where lots of aliens will terrorise the population of a city and you must defend them. Aliens attacking your bases, which again, you must defend. And if you find an alien base you can take slaughter, destruction and devastation with the biggest weapons your eager troops can lay their little hands on, to those that really deserve it!

Destruction

I do like most strategy games, obviously some are better than others, and I would place this one firmly up there with the best. And if you also like something that is absorbing and will take a while to play, has nice big explosions and looks and plays well, then this game comes highly recommended. If on the other hand you want to just get in there and mutilate as many aliens as quickly as you can then maybe you should look elsewhere.
