£29.99 - CD Only

HeadquartersFoundation. The all-new and improved version of Settlers / Civilization / Mega-Lo-Mania that we've all heard so much about and been waiting so long for. Fork out your 30 quid, shove it in the CD drive, install some (or all) of it, run the preferences program, then fire it up.

Watch the short intro with the nice sunlight effect, choose your type of game, press 'start', make a cup of coffee, have a fag, flick through an old magazine and eventually the game will actually get going. This wait could of course be due to the fact that we're only using an A4000/030. Unfortunately it affects the game and the gameplay as well!

LaboratoryWhat I mean is that although you can speed up time within the game to make it go quicker, and a faster processor will obviously speed everything up, you don't actually seem to achieve much after spending hours of playing it. I've got to level 8 after some trial and error, experimenting with inputs and outputs, fidling with the occupants (!) of the buildings, and although I do want 'just one more go' (on the other hand I may not bother), I know it's because I was hoping that there was going to be more to the game! What I ended up doing is just taking my soldiers out straight away and sending them off to war to achieve the set objective.

PanelI've never played Settlers, but I love Civilization and Mega-Lo-Mania was very good. This I would say is a good game of this type but not great. It looks very much like Settlers and Powermonger. If you have enough resources you can build. You control the output of every building, mines, barracks, farms, etc. You can also control the amount of individual people and guards living and working in each building. Alter the flow of transportation of each item and even the priority of each item produced if you want. But in the end, aside from a few of the basic elements of necessity, you can leave your village to it's own devices and just add an extra building when discovered if you really need it.

PumphouseThe game looks nice, sounds nice, but unless I'm doing something really wrong right from the start (the sparce HTML manual doesn't help much) then I'm afraid that this one just doesn't do it for me.

I wanted to like this game, I had hoped that it would be the forerunner of some Command and Conquer type games, but it just doesn't seem to be so. I will try another couple of levels, and if any of you find anything important that I've missed then please let me know. Lets see if we can bump up the percentage.
