WELLSThe city of Wells, famous for being the smallest city in England and for it's great Gothic Cathedral built in the 12th and 13th centuries. Wells still remains to this day a busy market town and a commercial centre to the local community.
WELLS CATHEDRALThis was the first completely English Gothic Cathedral built in the 12th and 13th centuries. The West front contains the largest gallery of medieval sculpture in the world and illustrates biblical scenes, depicts Bishops, Kings and the twelve apostles. At its centre, the new statue of "The Risen Christ" displays a unique example of English art.
THE BISHOPS PALACEEnclosed within its battlements and moat, the Bishops Palace dates from the 13th century and still remains to this day, the residence of the Bishop of Bath and Wells. The palace has imposing state rooms and is surrounded by beautiful gardens. Here are also the springs from which Wells took its name and which supply the constant flow of water down the sides of the High Street, this was a gift to the city by Bishop Beckington in 1450.
VICARS CLOSEThis is the oldest complete medieval street in Europe, it was completed in 1348 to house the men of the choir and is still inhabited today.
WELLS MUSEUMThe museum has interesting displays on the past and present life of the city and surrounding area. It also has a display of medieval statues from the Cathedral and an exhibition showing how the Cathedral was built. |
