THE CIRCUS
Long before the age of the car The Circus was coated with a black grimy film generated by coal fires. The Circus was the first of Baths showpieces to be washed with water in 1955 as a result of the post-war partnership between the city council and the old Ministry of Public Works to restore the city's grandeur. The Circus, originally the King's Circus, was designed by John Wood in 1754, who based it on a Roman ampitheatre. The railings, put up in Victorian times, were carted off for scrap in the last war and seem unlikely to be reinstated. | ![]() |
