Water Based Stains
including ketchup, soft drinks, wine and alcoholic beverages should be removed using a good proprietary brand of carpet & upholstery shampoo. Follow the manufacturers directions and do not exceed the recommended rates.
Oil Based Stains
including salad dressing, butter and greasy foods, should be cleaned with a spot remover containing dry cleaning fluid which can be obtained from most hardware shops.

| Wine, soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, tea, coffee and other watery liquids. | Using a clean absorbent cloth, blot up as much liquid as possible. Rinse out remaining liquid with warm (not hot) water. Do not soak. Only if then necessary follow instructions under Water Based Staines". |
| Salad dressing, cooking oil and other oily liquids | Using a clean absorbent cloth, blot up as much liquid as possible. If necessary follow instructions under "Oil Based Stains". Then follow instructions under "Water Based Stains". |
| Butter, margarine, cream and other semi-solid spills | Use a dull knife or spatula carefully to lift off material. Blot up as much as possible (do not rub). Follow instructions under "Oil Based Stains" and then follow instructions under "Water Based Stains". |
| Solid foods, mud, soot and other solids | Lift with dull knife or spatula. Vacuum when dry. Follow instructions under "Water Based Stains" if necessary. |
| Candle Wax | Remove surface wax with dull knife and then follow instructions under "Oil Based Stains": alternatively cover the spot with several layers of paper towels and apply a warm iron. |
| Fruit and berry stains, fountain pen ink, emulsion paint, blood | Follow instructions under "Water Based Stains" but ensure you use cold water, as hot water may fix the stain in the fabric. |
| Paint (oil based) | Remove as much as possible with a dull knife or spatula. Blot up. Remove remainder with Turpentine substitute (white spirit) until clean. Then follow instructions under "Water Based Stains". |
| Vomit and urine | Remove as much as possible using a clean absorbent cloth then follow instructions under "Water Based Stains". |
| Shoe polish, grease, fat, motor oil | Follow instructions under "Oil Based Stains". |
