...A well-connected town Trowbridge, the county town of Wiltshire, lies in the heart of the South West of England approximately 10 miles from Bath, 25 miles southeast of Bristol and 100 miles from London. Situated in West Wiltshire, Trowbridge is the natural centre of the region's five small industrial towns - the others being Bradford-on-Avon, Melksham, Warminster and Westbury. With a population of 27,500, it is now the third largest town in Wiltshire, after Salisbury and Chippenham, following Swindon's transformation to a unitary authority in 1997. As well as being the county town of Wiltshire, Trowbridge is also the administrative centre of both Wiltshire County Council and West Wiltshire District Council. The town also has an active Town Council. Trowbridge is easily accessible to all major Centres in the country via excellent road and rail links, while air and sea links provide connections to further afield. By Road - The M4, M5 and A303/M3 serve Trowbridge and major improvements are planned to important road links to and from the town. There is a reliable public transport system serving all major towns in the area and providing a good journey-to-work service. By Rail - Trowbridge station is on the high-speed Cardiff to Southampton, Portsmouth and Brighton line and links to Bath and Westbury for services to London and the West Country. Direct access to Europe via the Channel Tunnel is available by a twice-daily fast service to London Waterloo to pick up the Eurostar service to Paris and Brussels. By Air - Bristol International Airport, a 45-minute drive from the town, has greatly expanded its facilities and services recently and offers daily return flights to major business centres in the UK and mainland Europe as well as operating many charter holiday flights. Airports at Southampton, Bournemouth and Cardiff are also close at hand - again with a wide range of services - while London Heathrow can be reached by car in about an hour and a half. By Sea - The busy commercial ports of Bristol (Avonmouth and Royal Portbury), Portsmouth, Southampton, Weymouth and Plymouth - with cross-channel and roll-on-roll-off facilities - are within easy reach of the town. ...A centre for innovation and enterprise Having established itself as a successful mill town as early as the 15th century - the last mill closed in July 1982 - Trowbridge today is a diversified and ideal location for new business development. From precision engineering, construction, warehousing and distribution and the manufacture of food and automotive products to financial and IT services, West Wiltshire is a centre for innovation and technical expertise. Trowbridge itself lies in an attractive area with an active employment base in the heart of the town. Some of the former mills are still in use, now used for the manufacture of modern products. In recent years, the town has seen the development of edge-of-town employment sites, including the state-of-the-art White Horse Business Park, which is the flagship site in the district. The availability of good sites and premises has encouraged local firms to expand as well as attracting new businesses to relocate to Trowbridge. Major names established in the region include Airsprung, Virgin Mobile, Vodafone, Nestle, Bowyers, Avon Rubber, apetito, Peter Black and BTR Peradin. More recent arrivals include Telewest, Virgin Mobile and Cereal Products. |
